The Emotion Code

What Is the Emotion Code?

10 April 2025 6 min read

Have you ever found yourself reacting to something in a way that felt too big for the situation? Or carrying a heaviness you could not quite explain, a kind of emotional weight that no amount of journalling or talking seemed to shift? Maybe there is a pattern that keeps showing up in your relationships, your work, or your sense of self, one that you can see clearly but somehow cannot stop.

If any of that resonates, you are not alone. And you are also not broken. What is often happening in these moments is that there is something unresolved living beneath the surface. Not in your conscious mind, but in your body's energy field. The Emotion Code is one of the most precise and gentle tools I know of for working at exactly that level.

The idea behind it: emotional energy can get stuck

When we experience an intense moment and do not fully process the emotion it generates, that emotion does not simply disappear. It can lodge in the body as a kind of energetic charge. The Emotion Code calls these trapped emotions, and they are not merely memories or mental constructs. They are actual energetic disturbances that can influence how you feel, how you think, and even how your body functions.

The Emotion Code was developed by Dr Bradley Nelson, a chiropractor and holistic physician who spent decades working with patients whose physical symptoms kept pointing back to unresolved emotional energies. He found that when he identified and released those energies, not only did emotional burdens lift, but physical complaints often improved as well. He documented his findings and his method in the book The Emotion Code, first published in 2007. Since then, it has become one of the most widely practised energy healing modalities in the world.

What exactly is a trapped emotion?

Dr Nelson identified 60 specific emotions that can become trapped in the body. These are arranged in a chart organised by rows and columns, from more familiar states like anger, grief and anxiety to subtler ones like creative insecurity, unsupported, and helplessness. The chart is a reference tool, not an exhaustive list of everything a human can feel, but it provides a working vocabulary for navigating the emotional landscape of the subconscious.

A trapped emotion has three key qualities: a frequency (a specific vibrational signature), a location in the body (where it is held), and an origin event (the moment or period when it became lodged). All three can be identified through the muscle testing process described below.

What surprises many people is that trapped emotions are not always our own. They can be inherited, passed down through the family lineage from parents or ancestors who experienced events so overwhelming that the emotional charge became encoded in their biology and was then transmitted to future generations. They can also be absorbed: a child who grows up around a grieving parent, for example, may absorb that grief as their own, carrying it in their field without ever realising where it came from.

How does the Emotion Code work?

Muscle testing: the body as a yes/no compass

The Emotion Code uses a technique called muscle testing, or applied kinesiology, to communicate with the subconscious mind. The premise is that the body's energy field responds to true statements with strength and false statements with weakness. This means that when you make a true statement in the presence of the body, the muscles remain strong. When you make a false statement, they momentarily weaken.

This is not guesswork. Muscle testing has been used in clinical settings since the 1960s and is the same principle that underlies a number of established healthcare practices. In the context of the Emotion Code, it becomes a precise navigational tool, allowing the practitioner to ask yes/no questions of the client's subconscious: Is there a trapped emotion here? Is it in column A? Is it inherited? Did it originate before age ten?

The Emotion Code chart

Once muscle testing has confirmed that a trapped emotion is ready to be identified, the practitioner works through the chart systematically, using a binary process of elimination to narrow down which of the 60 emotions is present. The chart is divided into two columns and six rows, so within just a few questions, the specific emotion can be located.

This might sound mechanical, but in practice it is a remarkably intuitive process. The chart is a tool, not a cage. It provides structure so the practitioner and client do not have to wade through the full complexity of the subconscious unaided.

Releasing the trapped emotion

Once the emotion has been identified, along with any relevant context (such as its origin or whether it is inherited), it is released. The practitioner runs a magnet along the Governing Meridian, the main energy channel that runs along the spine and over the top of the head. In the context of quantum energy work, the practitioner's intention, combined with the magnetic field of the magnet, creates the shift that allows the trapped energy to release.

That is it. There is no prolonged processing. No need to revisit the story. The body does the releasing. The magnet and intention simply provide the conditions for it to happen.

What can the Emotion Code help with?

People come to Emotion Code sessions for a wide range of reasons. Some of the most common include:

  • Recurring anxiety or unexplained sadness that does not seem to have a clear cause
  • Physical pain or discomfort that has no clear diagnosis or has not responded to conventional treatment
  • Patterns that keep repeating in relationships, work, or finances
  • Feeling blocked even after years of personal development work
  • Low self-worth or a persistent sense of not being enough
  • Difficulty giving or receiving love, or staying open in relationships

The Emotion Code does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. What it does is address the energetic layer beneath those experiences. And for many people, that is the layer where the real shift happens.

The Heart-Wall: a special form of trapped emotion

When trapped emotions accumulate around the heart, the subconscious can begin building a protective barrier: a structure made not of physical material, but of layers of emotional energy. Dr Nelson called this the Heart-Wall. It can block joy, love, abundance, and genuine connection in ways that feel subtle but pervasive.

The Heart-Wall deserves its own dedicated read. You can find it here: What Is the Heart-Wall?

Can the Emotion Code be done remotely?

Yes, and this is where the work becomes genuinely remarkable. Because energy operates outside the constraints of physical distance, the Emotion Code can be carried out via proxy testing: the practitioner uses themselves as a surrogate for the client, connecting with the client's energy field through intention and the quantum field.

I work with clients across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, the USA, Europe and beyond, all via Zoom. The distance does not diminish the work. If anything, remote sessions can feel just as precise and powerful as in-person work would be.

What to expect from a session

An Emotion Code session is calm and unhurried. You do not need to relive anything. You do not need to tell me your whole story. You can simply arrive, share what you are working with, and let the session unfold from there.

I will use muscle testing to identify which trapped emotions are ready to be released in this session, share what comes up, and release them one by one. A typical session may address between 5 and 20 emotions, depending on what the body is prioritising.

After the session, you may feel a shift quite quickly. Or it may unfold gradually over the hours and days that follow. Some people feel lighter almost immediately. Others notice something has changed only when they find themselves responding differently to a situation that would previously have triggered them.

Is the Emotion Code right for you?

The Emotion Code tends to be a particularly good fit for people who have already done significant personal development work and feel like something is still off at a deeper level. If you have been in therapy, done the journalling, read the books, and still feel a weight you cannot shift, it may be because the work has not yet reached the subconscious energetic layer. That is exactly where the Emotion Code works.

It is also a good starting point for anyone curious about energy healing who wants an approach that is grounded and relatively easy to understand. You do not need to believe in anything in particular for this to work. You simply need to be open.

If you are ready to find out what your body is holding and what might be ready to release, I would love to work with you.
